The Clinton Police Department was established in the early 1900s. Officers began cross-training in 1999 and the department was established as the Clinton Public Safety Department in April 2005. Chief John C. Thomas joined us in March 2005.

THE CAMPAIGN
Sober of Slammer! is a statewide multi-juriscidtional, high visibility DUI enforcement and public information and education campaign spearheaded by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. The goal of Sober or Slammer! is to reduce alcohol-related collisions, injuries and fatalities through a decrease in impaired driving. To achieve this goal, state and local law enforcement agencies have joined forces in waves of high visibility enforcement of South Carolina's impaired driving laws.

- South Carolina ranks as one of the worst states in the Nation for alcohol-related fatal crashes.
- Impaired driving continues to be the most frequently committed violent crime in America.
- The rate of alcohol involvement in collisions is more than three times as high at night as during the day.
- It has been estimated that as many as 2000 alcohol-impaired driving trips occur for every arrest made.
- Typically, males account for between 85 and 90 percent of the at-fault drivers in DUI collisions
