Welcome
A Message from Director Thomas

Welcome to the Clinton Public Safety
Department’s website!  Director John
Thomas and the officers of the CPSD are
glad you chose to join them today.  The
CPSD provides law enforcement and fire
services to the City of Clinton.  Made up of
approximately 50 employees, the CPSD is
currently transitioning from separate fire and
police entities into one consolidated Public
Safety Department.  The public safety
system utilizes employees who are trained
as firefighters and police officers to patrol the
city and ensure the safety of all citizens in all
situations.  These officers are cross-trained to better provide multiple services to the city.  The Clinton fire district extends beyond the city limits and provides fire services to that area as well.

Public safety officers work on rotating 12-hour shifts to provide adequate protection to the city at all times, day and night.  The CPSD has four school resource officers who are assigned to the following schools:  Martha Dendy Sixth Grade Center, Bell Street Middle School and Clinton High School.  These officers interact with the students on a daily basis inside the schools as well as on the street and have taught classes on law-related topics to students in many Laurens County School District 56 schools.

The mission of the CPSD is to provide law enforcement and fire services to the citizens of Clinton by being proactive toward criminal activity occurring in the city.  CPSD also strives to ensure that all officers receive continued training and are able to effectively deal with the incidents they handle on a daily basis.

Director Thomas began his career at the Clinton Police Department in 1981 where he rose through the ranks to become the first Training Officer for the City of Clinton.  In 1989, he left Clinton to work with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.  He was named Director in April 2005, becoming the first Director of Public Safety for the City of Clinton.  He and his wife, Caroline, have two children, Jessica and Adam.
